African daisies (Arctotis hybrids) are easy to grow and come in a wide variety of colours - purple, mauve, white, cream, yellow, apricot or carmine, and many are two toned or have splashes of contrasting colour. No wonder they are popular garden plants.

Unusual flowers - Liatris spicata by Liz
With its bright purple feathery flower clusters, Liatris is also called "Blazing Star" or "Gay feather". This plant is part of the Daisy family (Asteraceae) and is is native to North America, Mexico and the Bahamas. Photographed in Scotland by Liz.

Winter blues - Echinops ritro "Veitch's blue" by Liz

Small globe thistle or Echinos ritro "Veitch's blue" is a variety of thistle with globules of blue flowers on white stems. Interestingly they are in the same plant family (Asteraceae) as daisies.
